The Exchange

Project Type – Commercial, Fit out

A significant conservation project to sympathetically refurbish and restore a hidden commercial gem in one of Newcastle upon Tyne's most popular suburbs.

In 2008, Taemar embarked on a project to convert a former Telephone Exchange on the edge of the South Jesmond conservation area in Newcastle upon Tyne into 15,000 sq. ft. (1393 sq. m.) of contemporary office space.

The interior of the Exchange Building was fully refurbished to a very high specification and stylish mixed size office suites were created for hire.  The unique character of the building was retained, with the simple art deco façade as originally built in 1949 left untouched.

As one of the tallest buildings in the Jesmond area, The Exchange building offers spectacular views across Jesmond Dene, one of Newcastle’s most esteemed areas of natural beauty.

The building is three storeys, offering a generous floor to ceiling height. The upper two floors were successfully converted into contemporary office space and the ground floor was retained for the use of British Telecom.

The Adderstone Group enjoyed five years with their Head Office based in the Exchange Building from 2008 to 2013, prior to the company’s office relocation to larger premises.

To this day, The Telephone Exchange provides high quality studio style offices with generous floor to ceiling heights, providing a light and airy working environment.
